Technical education as we know it began with the founding of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts in 1833. The State Government assumed responsibility for Sydney Technical College in 1883, the date often quoted as the year TAFE NSW was born.

Since this beginning throughout wars, depressions, recessions and economic growth periods, TAFE NSW has been skilling the workforce to ensure our State prospers and the goals of individuals are realised.

Over this long and proud history, meeting the skill needs of industry and communities has been a driving force. Our courses and services have adapted and changed over the years to meet the changing skill needs of our economy.

We are proud of our longstanding reputation for quality services. Throughout our history we have had the know-how and experience to get the best results for our students and employers.

Today with over 500,000 enrolments and over 1000 course offerings from certificate to degree level, we continue to strive to achieve our ambition to be the brand in global demand to build skills for success in today's and tomorrow's world.
