Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd and TAFE NSW through its National Business Division entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 8 April 2011 with two priorities underlining this new training partnership.
Specifically, TAFE NSW will deliver training solutions to support Abigroup’s commitment to providing employees with the opportunity to gain formal recognition of existing work-based skills to contribute towards a TAFE NSW qualification. Skills development pathways will also be identified for those interested in career advancement within the organisation.
The first program of the partnership will be the assessment and training of road construction workers who have developed skills through extensive on-the-job experience and practical application.
TAFE NSW trainers with an understanding of the industry and experience in civil construction will conduct a skills assessment of each participant based on practical work skills and prior learning against the national qualifications of Certificate III in Road Construction and Maintenance and the Certificate III in Bridge Construction and Maintenance.
Credit will be awarded as applicable towards a nationally accredited qualification. Where skills gaps are identified, an individual training plan will be mapped out in consultation with the program participant and supervisor, to enable each employee to develop the additional knowledge required to achieve a full TAFE NSW qualification in an agreed timeframe.
Assessments and training will be conducted by TAFE NSW trainers onsite at four Abigroup worksite locations across NSW. Opportunities for additional on-the-job training with supervisor support will be made managed by Abigroup.
It is envisaged this will be the first program of a long-term training partnership between Abigroup and TAFE NSW.
