Aged care industry partnership first

TAFE NSW is creating an Australian first industry partnership that will co-locate aged care facilities and provide first class, on-the-job training for students.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills John Barilaro welcomed applications from all aged care providers for the first-of-a-kind partnership while on a visit to the TAFE NSW Randwick campus yesterday.

"We are bringing Australia's leading public VET provider, TAFE NSW, and industry together so students can learn how to care for our ageing population on the job from qualified aged care staff," Mr Barilaro said.

"These types of partnerships ensure industry plays a key role in the education and training of our future skilled workforce, providing quality facilities where students can receive on the job experience throughout their course of study."

The NSW Government is building a workforce to fill the demand for jobs in the health, retirement living, home and aged care sectors to accommodate Australia's ageing population.

Minister for Ageing John Ajaka welcomed the NSW Government's work in this area, saying that one in four Australians will be over the age of 65 by 2065.

"Our ageing population means it is absolutely vital that we train students in the right environment so they can join the existing quality aged care workforce, job ready," Mr Ajaka said.

"This innovative partnership will help ensure older people in NSW get the highest quality care and will support the growth of the aged care sector into the future."

TAFE NSW will consider trial sites in a number of regional and Sydney outer metropolitan locations.

This industry partnership is another important milestone in the One TAFE reforms. The vision is for TAFE NSW to become more efficient and modern. The reforms will allow it to build on a widely-recognised and well-respected reputation, delivering for students across the state.
