Empower electrical program

Course for Indigenous youth that opens doors to electrical apprenticeships

Are you a young Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander aged 15-24 years looking for a start in the electrical trade?

emPOWER is a 10 week pre-apprenticeship program designed to open up amazing opportunities for young Aboriginal people in electrical apprenticeships. The program is fully funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment as part of the Empowering Youth Initiatives.

Program Coordinator, Lyn Wilson, says emPOWER is all about giving you the skills and confidence to be recruited as an apprentice electrician. emPOWER has many partner organisations who want to employ graduates of the course as apprentices.

"We want you to succeed. In this program, we all work together."

There are two options for this full-time, 10-week course:

  • Aboriginal Pathways Centre, TAFE NSW Campbelltown from 28 August; or
  • Eora Centre TAFE NSW (Redfern) from 23 October.

Dylan Narsamma, a recent graduate of empower shares his thoughts on the course.

“At TAFE I fitted in. I wasn’t treated as a child, and that helped me. “When I finished the course, I had interviews with all companies, and was offered a load of apprenticeships. I took up the job with NECA.”

Dylan is now a third-year apprentice. He loves his career, and is powering up for the future.
