These days no modern workplace can really afford to be without a work health and safety policy
So, you'd like to work in the occupational health and safety area…
Occupational health and safety is a widespread field that can be found in most organisations across most industry areas. Work health and safety professionals develop risk management strategies by identifying workplace hazards, assessing risks and recommending solutions. They are also responsible for many environmental aspects of the workplace.
Personal qualities and attributes that would make you a good fit for this line of work include tact and diplomacy, good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to think laterally.
For WHS careers such as Work Health and Safety Manager or Senior Work Health and Safety Officer, you'll need TAFE's Diploma of Work Health and Safety, which is now available through TAFE NSW Online. This qualification is suitable for roles that involve the coordination and maintenance of the work health and safety program in an organisation. The entry requirements for this course are satisfactory completion of all core units of TAFE NSW's Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety or equivalent competencies. You may also enrol for the Diploma if you have extensive vocational experience in work health and safety roles.
Completion of the Diploma in Work Health and Safety will give you a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of work health and safety contexts. You will qualify for a variety of roles across different organisations and industry areas. You will also be eligible to enrol for the Advanced Diploma of Work Health and Safety.
These days no modern workplace can really afford to be without a work health and safety policy, which means qualified people to monitor, coordinate, maintain and implement the relevant policies and procedures will always be in demand.
