TAFE NSW student takes on WorldSkills International Competition

Outstanding hairdresser and TAFE NSW Port Macquarie student, Gaby Ware, will be competing in the Abu Dhabi WorldSkills International Competition, Australia's largest vocational skills competition, this coming October.

Outstanding hairdresser and TAFE NSW Port Macquarie student, Gaby Ware, will be competing in the Abu Dhabi WorldSkills International Competition, Australia's largest vocational skills competition, this coming October.

Gaby will be alongside 23 of Australia's current national champions, each competing in their own particular trade or skill.

It was Gaby's medal winning performance at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Competition last October that secured her a place on the Australia Skills Squad team; an incredible accomplishment by the talented 20-year old.

Gaby recently flew to Manchester, UK, to undergo intensive training sessions and work with her counterparts in the lead up to the competition. Gaby told Port Macquarie News that her WorldSkills experience in the UK had been hard work but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"This training event is good for us as we can see what other countries are doing and their techniques," Gaby said.

A particular focus for Gaby right now is learning to be in the 'competition zone'.

Gaby does regular training at TAFE NSW Port Macquarie campus where she developed her impressive skill-set in cutting, colouring, perming, chemical straightening, creating upstyles and catwalk inspired designs.

Five countries will compete over four days in the hairdressing category throughout the competition.

If Gaby is successful, she will become one of the elite young men and women who will join the 2017 Skillaroos team and have the opportunity to showcase her skills on the world's stage.

Looking forward to following Gaby on her incredible journey!
