Turn Your Career Into an Adventure

Do you live for weekends where you can go on outdoor adventures? What if I told you that you didn't have to wait for the weekend, that you could make adventure your full-time job?

It's true! And the job title is Adventure Guide (and yes, it is a real job).

Adventure guides spend their days hiking, kayaking, bushwalking, white-water rafting, abseiling, camping, and surfing. And they get paid to do it.

But it gets more interesting….currently, there is a lack of qualified adventure guides in Australia, and so employers are going to great lengths to recruit overseas.

So if you're sick of being stuck behind your desk under the neon glare of office lighting, now could be a really great time to make the switch.

Let's investigate the job a little further…

What exactly does an adventure guide do?

Adventure guides plan, guide and coach people in outdoor adventure activities.

They can operate one-on-one instruction, or work with groups.

In short, it's a fun job where you get to work with people that are actually eager for you to take them on adventures!

As an adventure guide you will:

  • Plan awesome adventures for individuals and groups.
  • Conduct safety briefings, and be able to administer first aid if the need arises.
  • Guide and instruct clients in activities like hiking, abseiling, scuba diving, kayaking, white water rafting, bungy jumping, archery and much more!
  • Set up and inspect adventure equipment to make sure it's in working order and safe to use.
  • Take bookings and process payments.
  • What skills do adventure guides have?

Adventure guides must have a passion for outdoor adventuring. After that, they need to:

  • Be qualified with a Certificate II, III or IV in Outdoor Recreation.
  • Have the relevant qualifications (if needed) in the adventure activity they guide (i.e. a scuba instructor will need to have their instructors license).
  • Be physically fit.
  • Be a great problem solver.
  • Have serious time management skills.
  • Enjoy working with people (some will be lovely, some may be difficult, and you will need to be able to work with them all).
  • Want to be an adventure guide?
