Bee keeping project a ‘reel’ hit for TAFE NSW Loftus students

TAFE NSW Loftus is set to throw open the doors to prospective students next week at the InfoFest event.

As school leavers consider their career options for 2019, InfoFest will showcase many job pathways offered by TAFE NSW, with staff on hand to assist with enrolments, career advice and campus tours.

It comes as TAFE NSW Loftus Cetificate IV Screen and Media students have produced a project with the Illawarra Beekeepers Association to highlight the declining bee population.

TAFE NSW teacher Nicolas Blesynski said the aim was to inspire more aspiring filmmaker to start their journey with TAFE NSW.

“We wanted to do some community-based projects to give students from The Shire experience of producing content for a real client with real deadlines,” he said.

“Small groups like the Illawarra Beekeepers Association are the real heroes because they are leading the charge to increase bee populations by encouraging amateur beekeepers to set up their own hives to encourage pollination for plants, flowers and crops.

“When we met with the Illawarra Beekeepers Association they said a short video would really help them spread the message, so we agreed to collaborate on a project with the students.

TAFE NSW Loftus students have filmed and interviewed Penny Dowyn, President of the Illawarra Beekeepers Association.

Content was captured on an iPhone, and the short films will remain on the TAFE NSW YouTube page.

Members of the Sutherland Shire community can explore Screen and Media course and career options by registering to attend an information session as part of TAFE NSW InfoFest between 24 – 28 June via www.tafensw.edu.au.

TAFE NSW Loftus are running a fee-free short course in film making during the mid-semester break. To find out more about studying Screen and Media at TAFE NSW visit www.tafensw.edu.au or call 131 601.
