Hands-on experience unlocks career goals for TAFE NSW graduate

Jannat Tarafder

Accounting student Jannat Tarafder found that despite holding a master’s degree, the practical skills she learnt at TAFE NSW St George were critical in helping her secure her ideal job.

Originally from Bangladesh, Jannat was already highly qualified and had previously worked in several fields including finance, security services and childcare. When she arrived in Australia, Jannat decided she would pursue a career in one of Australia’s fastest-growing professions – accounting.

In 2018, there were over 800,000 people employed in Financial Services roles, over 6 per cent of employment across the Australian economy. She is entering the profession at the perfect time, as there are expected to be around 84,000 new job openings in accounting over the next 5 years.

Thinking it would lead to a job, Jannat had completed a Masters in Professional Accounting with a view to securing employment as an accountant.

Unfortunately, Jannat found she could not secure a job interview even with this high-level qualification. She did not have any practical, hands-on experience in the day-to-day work of a professional accountant that employers were looking for.

“I knew I needed an edge, so I decided to enrol in a course at TAFE NSW that would equip me with the practical skills employers are looking for,” Jannat said.

Jannat was thrilled when she discovered that through her Certificate IV in Accounting at TAFE NSW St George she was able to make strong connections within the industry and secure a job quickly. She now works as an accountant at First Class Accounts in Willoughby.

“The entire course is practical and developed in collaboration with the industry so that it is up to date.

“I gained computer skills like MYOB, Excel and Word, learnt how to lodge BAS, activity statements, ATO-related requirements and of course, basic bookkeeping and accounting skills.

“I loved the practical aspect of the course and how it showed me what it was like to work as an accounting professional. I feel confident in my new role and am so glad to have a job that I love after relaunching my career,” Jannat said.

With more than 1200 courses and access to more than 25,000 employers, TAFE NSW can help you progress your career. To find out what courses are on offer, visit www.tafensw.com.au or phone 131 601.
