TAFE NSW graduate opens business to meet childcare demands

Orange local Hannah McDonald has used the skills she learnt at TAFE NSW to open her own family daycare business and help meet the demand for early childhood educators in the Central West.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Hannah completed a Certificate III and Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE NSW, before opening a family day service.

“I retrained after being a veterinary nurse for four and a half years, and I haven’t looked back,” she said.

“I love seeing the children grow and develop, and I enjoy helping them achieve things. Studying at TAFE NSW gave me a lot of resources and knowledge that I revisit regularly to help me be a good educator.”

Data shows the demand for Australian early childhood educators is likely to grow by 7% in the decade from 2016 to 2026.

Orange is currently experiencing a shortage of early childhood educators and the local council is encouraging skilled workers to open more services, including family day care. Orange City Council has offered incentives to people entering the industry, in the hope to meet the demand for care.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Early Childhood Education and Care, Susan Bird, said TAFE NSW training equips students with the job-ready skills to be successful in an industry that employs the largest number of people in the Central West.

“A Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care equips students with the hands-on skills and experience that employers are looking for,” Ms Bird said.

Hannah, who is 24 years old, encouraged others thinking about starting in the industry, to enroll in a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE NSW and begin a rewarding career.

“It’s the best job in the world, and changing careers was the best decision I ever made,” she said.

“It is so rewarding, and the children really do become part of your family.”
