TAFE NSW helps locals launch their own creative business

A series of new short courses at TAFE NSW will offer those with a flair for creativity or a savvy business mind the opportunity to learn the skills to transform their ideas into a viable and successful business.

The creative design industry in NSW, which is the convergence of culture, information technology, media and business services, is valued at almost $19 billion, based on industry wages and salaries. [1]

Western Sydney in particular has seen a boom in the creative economy and has leveraged the cultural diversity of its population. Well-established cultural institutions such as Parramatta Riverside Theatre, Penrith Regional Galley and Casula Powerhouse have been key players in the development of creative life in the region.[2]

The four-week ‘Create a Creative Design Business’ intensive program at TAFE NSW Lidcombe will give students creative and entrepreneurial skills to develop a business and marketing plan for a creative design business of their choice.

Students will also learn about the promotional tools that can be used to influence their target audience and how to develop a sustainable and environmental work practice, which are skills that are becoming increasingly important for businesses to adopt.

The short course caters to anyone who has recently started a small business and needs the practical skills to effectively market and promote a service or product, or to launch a business concept.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Fashion, Fiona Lloyd, said “The Creative Business short courses will give students the perfect mix of creative and entrepreneurial skills to transform small business ideas into action.”

“For people already working in the creative industry and looking to take the next step in their career, the short courses provide a basis for career progression to help students launch their own business.”

The course offers hands on skills including design and product development, as well as technical production skills to support management and creative businesses.
