TAFE NSW students from across the state have come together in a stunning celebration of music and live performance for international Make Music Day 2020. 

Make Music Day is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21st. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries. 

Students from across NSW – from TAFE NSW Nirimba, Ultimo, Eora and Wollongong experienced the joys of live music and performance as they gathered at TAFE NSW Eora to pre-record music sets to upload to the Make Music Day 2020 website. 

Certificate III in Music Industry student Darlene Proberts is a proud Wiradjuri woman and said the event was a great opportunity to enjoy the thrill of song and music performance after the COVID-19 restrictions had put a pause on live gigs over the past few months. 

“This has been a wonderful chance to get together with my fellow students and band and sweep the cobwebs off to really showcase what we can do with music,” Darlene said. 

“I started my music career three years ago at TAFE NSW Eora and have never looked back; pursuing music at a mature age was a big challenge for me but TAFE NSW has given me the skills to not only make music but to work in the industry and I’ve been able to explore many pathways including making music in aboriginal language for children.” 

In the spirit of collaboration, screen and media students from TAFE NSW St Leonards and Randwick were on hand to assist with the recordings and students from TAFE NSW Newcastle will also be pre-recording live performances later this week to add to the mix. 

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Cultural Arts Gabriella Dinallo said the event was a resounding success and appreciated by both staff and students. 

“Make Music Day is a great opportunity for our students to refine their skills in music production and live performance and was sorely needed after the musical hibernation of the past few months. 

“The transition of the event to the online world has given our students the chance to learn new skills and has allowed us to engage and collaborate with TAFE NSW students studying screen and media  in the process so that they can practice and hone their craft.” 

The videos will now be edited for upload onto the Make Music Day 2020 website in preparation for the world to view on June 21.
