TAFE NSW helps Lachie pirouette to physiotherapy

One of Tamworth’s ballet stars has an important message for anyone without an ATAR who wants to pursue their dream of studying a degree; it’s never too late to learn.

Lachie Martin returned to Tamworth to complete a one-year Higher School Certificate (HSC) equivalent course at TAFE NSW which has established a pathway to university to study physiotherapy after a career-ending injury saw him leave the prestigious Australian Ballet School.

“Not only did ballet take a toll on my body, it also affected my schooling and I didn’t complete the HSC.

“I wouldn’t have been able to transition into a new career path as a physiotherapist and achieve my academic goals if it wasn’t for the help of TAFE NSW,” Lachie said.

Lachie studied a Certificate III and IV in Tertiary Preparation (TPC) at TAFE NSW Tamworth to gain an ATAR equivalent to apply for entry to study a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at university.

“The adult learning environment and self-guided study at TAFE NSW was very helpful in preparing me for university and has suited me more than the traditional high school learning environment.”

When he completes his degree, Lachie plans to give back to the community by applying his personal experiences to helping others manage their injuries and pain.

“We live in a world that is constantly evolving and tackling new challenges such as COVID-19, researching and coming up with new technologies is something that, in time, I would like to be involved in. With the help of TAFE NSW, I am closer of making these goals a reality,” Lachie said.

According to .id community Australia, just over 50% of Australian people aged 15 years and above had completed Year 12 schooling (or equivalent).

TAFE NSW Career Pathways and Employability Skills Teacher, Ann-Maree Turner said Lachie worked consistently across his studies to develop and improve his writing and research skills.

“The Tertiary Preparation Certificate allowed Lachie to gain the skills and confidence he needed to be able to pursue his higher education dreams.

“Lachie is the perfect example of students relaunching their career at TAFE NSW to be in a career they’ll love.”

The Tertiary Preparation Certificate is available for enrolment for semester two now at TAFE NSW Tamworth. For more information visit www.tafensw.edu.au or call 131 601.
