TAFE Western nursing students jet off to China

Ten eager TAFE Western nursing students jetted off to the land of Feng Shui, martial arts and ancient medicine on Friday to advance their nursing skills.

The students travelled overseas as part of TAFE Western's Outbound Mobility Program. This program provides support for students to undertake international study tours. It provides students with 'hands on' cultural learning experience while giving them credit towards their Australian studies.

Accompanied by head teacher, Debbie Greenhalgh, the students will take up residency at two of China's leading hospitals. They will be split into groups and will alternate five-day placements at Shanghai Redleaf Women's Hospital and American-Sino Obstetrician, Gynaecology and Paediatrics Services.

This experience will give students a firsthand look at the very different nursing techniques used in China. They will also learn about cultural influences on the healthcare in the country. Students will learn vital skills they will be able to introduce into their practices once they return to Australia. This will broaden their understanding of how their industry works from a global perspective and enhance their career opportunities in Australia and abroad.

It's not all work though, in their down time students will be able to truly immerse themselves in the Chinese culture by going on guided tours, participating in cooking and calligraphy classes and attending acrobatic shows.
