How to study in higher education

Having a broad understanding of these skills can make a big difference to your success rate at university

So, you're thinking of studying for a degree or continuing on to higher education.

While universities and higher education courses have much in common with vocational education and training (VET), there are also some fundamental differences. This includes an emphasis on academic research, theoretical-based learning and essay-writing. These can be daunting or intimidating for anyone who's unfamiliar with the culture and academic rigour of higher education. Maybe you haven't studied for a long time or never really found it to be your thing when you were at school. Maybe you lack confidence in your study skills or worry that you won't be able to keep up with the theory. Many students are put off because they think they won't fit in or lack confidence in their own abilities.

While VET tends to be very practical and hands-on, higher education places more of an emphasis on theory-based learning. TAFE NSW Online's Academic Foundation Skills course has been designed as a supportive pathway for learners who wish to enter academic study and require an understanding of the higher education learning environment and culture. It's also an ideal course for someone with little or no study experience, as it has no entry requirements.

The course covers a wide range of subjects and areas specific to higher education such as a knowledge of plagiarism, bibliographies and source material, critical thinking skills, academic research techniques, essay writing and examining academic texts. Having a broad understanding of these skills can make a big difference to your success rate at university or studying a TAFE NSW Degree.

This course will give you a solid foundation and the skills to enter the world of higher education with confidence. Best of all, you can pick up these skills whenever and wherever it suits you. Get ready before you start uni or polish up your skills while you're studying for your Degree.
