Brick by brick

That's how Nader Sameer is rebuilding his new life in Australia after fleeing war-torn Iraq with his family. And he's doing it with TAFE NSW.

Six weeks after arriving in Australia from Bagdad, Nader's training at TAFE NSW's Granville Campus has landed him a job in construction.

TAFE NSW's bricklaying course has paved the way for paid employment for Nader and others who are in a similar situation.

He told Fairfax Media through an interpreter that his family was at risk in Iraq where he worked as an electrician and builder.

"I will start working with someone and when I get my licence, I will have my own business… to support family and help our community," he told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Nader is excited about the prospects of building a bright future in Australia.

"(Australia) is a good country and anyone can build a future in it," he said.
