The Yarradamerra Centre is part of Dubbo College's Myall Street Campus and worked collaboratively with the statewide Birrang Learner Driver program to deliver the initiative over a five-week period throughout February and March.

Driving Instructor Brett Naden told the Daily Liberal that the program proved to be an overwhelming success with 17 participants obtaining their Learner Licence (Ls) and six obtaining their Provisional Driver's Licence (Ps).

"It's very valuable because… the people who gained their Ps, it has made them independent," Mr Naden said. "And there are a few I know now who have applied for a few jobs because now they hold a licence and they can get to work."

One of the particularly outstanding pupils was Bill Collis (pictured), who obtained first his Ls and then his Ps in the space of five weeks. Mr Collis is already putting his newfound skills to work, driving his nephews to school and providing lifts around town for other family members.

Transport (or lack thereof) is often an ongoing issue for people living in regional areas, even large towns like Dubbo. Acquiring a driver's license can create individual independence as well as opening up employment opportunities in locations that are beyond reasonable walking distance.

The program has been so successful that Mr Naden is already receiving enquiries as to when it will be held again in Dubbo.
