Workplaces are full of people who do their work well but toil away in obscurity, missing out on pay rises and promotions because not enough people recognise the contribution they're making. Just doing the job you were hired to do isn't going to get you anywhere fast; you need to be seen to be going above and beyond the call of duty to stand out from the pack. Here are some suggestions on how to do that.

Get the appropriate qualifications

People usually get their first few jobs due to the technical skills they possess but then need to acquire a whole new skill set, particularly in areas such as managing people and finances, if they are going to climb up the corporate ladder. Learn to interact effectively with people

We all know someone who isn't necessarily an outstanding performer but still gets regularly promoted because they know how to get on with their boss, colleagues and staff. Regardless of whether that's fair or not, the fact is that being able to charm, persuade, motivate and socialise with other people is a vital skill in modern workplaces. TAFE recognises this reality, which it why it puts a big emphasis on work experience and other activities that encourage students to learn how to work well with others.

Be well organised

It only takes one missed deadline to get a reputation for being unreliable. Fortunately, no matter what you study, the experience of having to balance study, work, family commitments while doing your course is almost certain to result in improved time management skills and the ability to deliver projects on schedule.

Speak up and make a positive contribution

Whether it's a formal meeting, a team brainstorming session or just a casual chat with your supervisor about a workplace issue, you're going to be judged on your ability to contribute ideas on how things can be improved. Most likely you'll also be expected to provide constructive feedback on the suggestions of others. Invaluable experience in presenting an idea, in written or verbal form, as well as critiquing other people's concepts, can be gained by doing a TAFE course.
