Finding freedom as a freelance designer

Luke is expressing himself as a freelance graphic designer, with clients ranging from DJs to professional wrestlers.

Finding freedom as a freelance designer

When he left high school, Luke had no idea that his passion for drawing would turn into a career. He jumped in with a graphic design course at TAFE NSW, and hasn’t looked back. Now his designs are popping up everywhere.

Learn in class; ditto for career

"I’m not just learning about graphic design but I’m establishing myself as a graphic designer," Luke says.

Armed with his new industry skills, Luke (pictured below) had the confidence to take on freelance work. His very first client was wrestler Robbie Eagles who competes in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Despite being new to freelancing, Luke was ready to give 110%. Now he’s in demand.

“Since I’ve gone freelance, I’ve designed a t-shirt for the Australian Survivor contestants, a crew neck sweater for a Sydney based DJ, and a sticker for a race car. The work is constant and I am now designing merchandise for t-shirts, hats, jackets and stickers."

Luke's success is his teachers' success

TAFE NSW teachers live to see their students succeed. With their guidance and support, they can make you job-ready.

"I get to network and learn from some amazing teachers. They’re also supportive and if I’m stuck on a design concept, they’re always happy to help and let me bounce ideas off them."

Turning your passion into a career is closer than you think. Let TAFE NSW help you focus on the skills and connections you will need.
