Aiming sky-high

If you know what you want to do, then don’t hold yourself down. Check out Taylah.

Aiming sky-high

Take off with your passion

Taylah started flying when she was just 16 years old.

“I knew from the age of 12, that being a pilot was the only job for me!” said Taylah.

She says the 'office views’, the challenges, and constant growth, as well as endless extensions on where it can take you, just turned the whole career choice puzzle into a total ‘non puzzle’.

She started flying gliders in the Airforce Cadets when she was 16 years old. At 19, Taylah joined a TAFE NSW Diploma of Aviation course (run in partnership with the Sydney Flight College) and completed her Commercial Pilots’ License the following year.

That was easy!

No it wasn't. It was tough. But in the right environment, anything is possible: “I have never worked so hard for something in my life!” she says.

“But the reward will always be one of my greatest achievements! I was very lucky to have an amazing group of people on my course with me, we motivated each other to be the best that we could. Sydney Flight College has an amazing fleet of well-looked-after planes, as well as experienced, insightful flight instructors.”

The day job

Taylah is now working as a flight instructor on the west coast – a long way from her ‘campus’ at Bankstown Airport.

“The journey has been a pretty amazing experience,” she says. “The time I've spent being a flight instructor has made me a better pilot, and the joy I get out of teaching someone to fly and to eventually go solo and get their first licence is priceless.

“Flying in WA, I couldn't recommend enough - glorious pink salt lakes, turquoise ocean colours, opportunity to spot whales as you fly over to Rottnest, where they always have a strong crosswinds which make for interesting flying! It’s just beautiful."

The tomorrow job

If that doesn’t sound good enough, check out her long term career goal: “In 10 years, I'll be landing a twin otter seaplane on an exotic beach. I'll chuck in an anchor, have a swim and watch the sunset.”
