 Skillaroos skip over to Russia to claim gold

Skillaroos: team members and mentors, ready to roll in WorldSkills Kazan 2019.

 

In the second of our series about our Skillaroos, we look at carpentry, cookery and fashion technology.

The International WorldSkills competition in Russia is the culmination of intense regional, state and national competitions.

Just like athletes who need their support crew, these competitors are surrounded by a whole team to provide them with the training, knowledge, tools, life skills and, importantly, the confidence to compete in the international arena.

The dedicated TAFE NSW teachers identified students as potential competitors, and then continue to mentor them through the various levels of the competition.

Carpentry

Hayden Dillon will represent Australia in the discipline of carpentry.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’m grateful to even be considered to represent Australia,” says Hayden.

“To be chosen to represent Australia at the WorldSkills International Championships is an absolute honour. Not only will I be able to show off my new found carpentry skills and knowledge, but I’ll also see what the other competitors have to offer.”

Fashion technology

Courtney New is a stitch above the rest and will compete in the fashion technology field.

“For me, it is a final test in self faith,” says Courtney. "I didn’t give up, I didn’t let the pressure get to me and that is why I am where I am today. I get to represent my country and continue improving my skills in a trade that I love and one day hope to make an impact in."

Commercial cookery

Cris Matowski is excited to be representing his country at WorldSkills in the field of commercial cookery.

"I am so grateful to WorldSkills Australia for this opportunity and very excited to be chosen," says Cris.

"I’m always trying to push myself that little bit extra to perfect my dishes.

“There is always something new to learn, the best chefs will go out of their way, out of their comfort zone to learn new things.”
