Shear sheep from basic to improver level. Gain shearing techniques and better equipment maintenance skills that will improve the speed and quality of your shearing, allowing you to advance your skills and move to higher levels of competition.

Outcomes What you'll gain

Learning outcomes

Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

  • Shear sheep at a basic level

  • Shear sheep at an improver level

  • Grind combs and cutters for machine shearing

  • Inspect shearing equipment, and report and rectify malfunctions

  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) while grinding

Course outcomes

Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.

  • A nationally accredited Statement of Attainment

  • A pathway to further study in shearing

  • Credit toward a full qualification

  • Techniques to shear sheep with more control, using more efficient movements

Entry requirements

This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol

  • A tally book showing that you can shear 40 sheep a day

  • The ability to join a pre-enrolment discussion with a TAFE NSW staff member

Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • A strong work ethic

  • A reasonable level of fitness to manage the physical demands of the role

  • The ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions

  • The ability to travel and spend time away from home

  • Vaccination against Q fever or other zoonotic diseases
