The nationally accredited Certificate I in Fundamental English for Speakers of Other Languages will teach you English language essentials. Course details

People who are successful in this course have:

  • An enthusiasm to learn new things

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.
In this course you will:

  • Engage in casual conversations where you give and ask for information
  • Listen to and understand casual conversations which include exchanges, instructions or directions
  • Read and understand information, including directions or instructions
  • Write simple notes, messages and give personal recounts

The Certificate I in Fundamental English for Speakers of Other Languages is for people who would like to learn to communicate in everyday English, while gaining confidence in their reading, writing and listening skills. When you complete this course, you will reach Level 1+ in English language skills on the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ILSPR) scale.

Once you complete this course, you can enrol into other Certificate II courses to gain additional English language skills and give you the opportunity to further your education. An example would be the Certificate II in Basic English for Speakers of Other Languages.

The Certificate II in Routine English for Speakers of Other Languages, will help you speak functional English and communicate on a basic level. When you complete this course, you will reach Level 2 in English language skills on the ILSPR scale.

The Certificate III in English for Further Study will build your English language ability so you have the skills to study in Australia. When you complete this course, you will reach Level 2+ in English language skills on the ILSPR scale.

To make sure you choose the right study level for your ability, TAFE NSW will assess your language level.

You will gain basic skills to use in social situations in your community and workplace including:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

TAFE NSW offers you a range of online and on-campus study environments - industry specific computer rooms, simulated workplaces, study areas, presentation areas and general student facilities - to enhance your learning and employability.

You will complete this course in a classroom on campus with a teacher.
