Assessments give you the opportunity to show what you have learned and to identify the knowledge or skills that need improvement. In this course you will undertake:

  • Listening and comprehension assessment
  • Reading and writing assessment
  • Speech based assessment

The Certificate I in Fundamental English for Speakers of Other Languages is an entry level qualification for people who want to learn everyday English. When you complete this course, you will reach Level 1+ in English language skills on the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ILSPR) scale.

This course, the Certificate II in Routine English for Speakers of Other Languages, will help you speak functional English and communicate on a basic level. When you complete this course, you will reach Level 2 in English language skills on the ILSPR scale.

The Certificate III in English for Further Study will build your English language ability so you have the skills to study in Australia. When you complete this course, you will reach Level 2+ in English language skills on the ILSPR scale.
To make sure you choose the right study level for your ability, TAFE NSW will assess your language level at the time of enrolment.

You will learn basic English skills to use in social situations in your community and workplace including:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

You will gain practical experience in:

  • Informal face-to-face or telephone conversations
  • Listening to and understanding dialogues, news stories, instructions and directions
  • Writing basic English
  • Reading and understanding news stories, short stories, information and general instructions

You will complete this course in a classroom on campus with a teacher.
