Working in a disaster management context is a political activity. It is bounded by legislation, policy, public expectation and influence. Power and politics form the intangible environment in which disaster managers must function. Developing political acumen allows the identification of sources of power, an understanding of how to build alliances and the ability to influence key decision-makers and negotiate with all levels of government to enable better community safety outcomes. Relationships and power are tightly knit, the knowledge and skills learnt in this course can also be applied in a work or personnel environment.
