Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned so far and identify the areas that need further development. In this course you will undertake a range of authentic assessment experiences including:

  • Knowledge tasks: quizzes, short answer questions, case studies, written tasks, research projects
  • Practical tasks before starting work placement: interviews, role-plays, creative projects, presentations, practical demonstrations
  • Workplace assessment tasks: written tasks, reflective journals, verbal or written questioning, practical demonstrations, workplace portfolios

The Certificate III level course is an entry level qualification. If you are thinking about a career as an educator, it is a great qualification to get you started and help you become confident that this is the right career for you.

The Diploma level course prepares you for work in more senior roles that have extra responsibility.

To enhance your learning experience outside of the classroom, authentic learning opportunities may be provided. Visits may take you to high quality regulated education and care services and other related education and care services.

Incursions may also be offered as part of your learning experience and may include specialised guest speakers from the early childhood profession.

Access to excursions and incursions are dependent on your campus location, local partnerships and whether your course is face-to-face or online.

This course offers an abundance of hands-on skills, including:

Hands-on care
You will learn how to take care of children, including their health, safety and nutrition in addition to the wellbeing of babies, toddlers and preschoolers. You will also learn to develop respectful relationships with children, their families and the wider community.

Learning frameworks in action
You will investigate learning and quality frameworks that will guide your educator practice. This provides you with hands-on opportunities to observe and document childrens learning and development.

Turning information into practice
You will learn how to use policies, procedures, individual childrens profiles and other information gathered to plan individualised experiences. You will facilitate childrens leisure and play to help them achieve their developmental and learning outcomes. During this process, you will investigate the design of inclusive curriculum that reflects experiences honouring childrens voice, culture and rights.

Your work placement experience covers real world projects such as writing curriculums and programs, and evaluating the progress children are making.

Many campuses across TAFE NSW simulate the working conditions of a regulated education and care service in their Professional Practice Centres. These centres replicate a regulated education and care service, use workplace policies and procedures, documentation, equipment and resources by providing services to babies, children and families from the local community.

If your campus does not have a Professional Practice Centre, other opportunities will be provided to practice your work skills and knowledge.

Qualified educators in early childhood are highly sought after. There is a strong Government focus on the importance of early childhood education and current policy initiatives suggest that funding in this area will increase.

There is significant research being conducted nationally and internationally into the importance of a childs early years and this research is likely to increase Government focus and funding.

The release of the NSW Early Childhood Workforce Strategy has put an increased focus on promoting the work of early childhood educators in relation to more flexibility in course outcomes and better publicity in the community about early childhood educators as a respected career.
