Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned so far and identify areas that need further development. In this course you will undertake:

  • Knowledge tasks: quizzes, short answer questions, case studies, written tasks, research projects
  • Practical tasks: interviews, role-plays, creative projects, presentations, practical demonstrations
  • Workplace assessment tasks: written tasks, reflective journals, verbal or written questioning, practical demonstrations, workplace portfolios

The Certificate III course is an entry level qualification. If you are thinking about a career as an educator, it is a great qualification to get you started and explore whether this is the right career path for you. It also provides you with direct entry into the Diploma.

This course, the Diploma is a mid-level qualification with a focus on developing leadership skills for early childhood services. This is a great qualification to prepare you for stepping up as a leader and educator in the sector.

To enhance your learning experience, outside of the classroom, authentic learning opportunities may be provided. Visits may take you to high quality regulated education and care services and other related education and care services.

Incursions may also be offered as part of your learning experience and may include specialised guest speakers from the early childhood profession.

Access to excursions and incursions are dependent on your campus location, local partnerships, and if your course is face-to-face rather than online.

This course offers a wealth of hands-on skills, including:

Hands-on care

You will deepen your skills and knowledge in caring for children (0-5 years) and hone your specialised practical skills and knowledge in child development, including:

  • Physical care of children
  • Health and nutrition
  • Safety and wellbeing of babies, toddlers and preschoolers
  • Developing respectful relationships with children, their families and the broader community

Learning frameworks and leadership

You will investigate and lead the practical application of the National Quality Framework. You will mentor and support other educators and gain the skills and knowledge in the early childhood field as an educational leader, supervisor, or manager in childcare.

You will also explore, identify and practice operational leadership to develop your skills so you can confidently progress with a career.

Turning information into practice

You will learn how to gather information about children for all relevant stakeholders, record observations and apply specialised knowledge, analysis and theoretical perspectives in a range of diverse contexts.

You will deepen your knowledge on applying information to inform planning for the child and learn how to lead the design and implementation of an inclusive curriculum.

TAFE NSW is known for delivering theory along with practical, hands-on learning. You will work on real world projects, such as:

  • Shadowing and observing more experienced educators / education leaders
  • Researching and investigating diverse cultural identities of children, families and wider communities
  • Identifying cultural safety strategies, implementing and developing cultural competency skills
  • Supporting childrens cultural identities and cross-cultural relationships, creating inclusive environments and learning experiences
  • Leading the practical application of the National Quality Standards and Early Years Learning Framework. Mentoring and supporting other educators to adhere to the learning and quality frameworks that guide educator practice
  • Building meaningful and responsive relationships with children and families
  • Providing physical care of children including health, safety and well-being of babies, toddlers and preschoolers
  • Facilitating safe experiences that promote children's health and safety
  • Constructing safe and meaningful play settings/environments. Creating stimulating and safe experiences and resources for children and babies
  • Identifying and responding to WHS risks. Conducting workplace risk assessments and responding accordingly
  • Developing practical operational and leadership skills that can help you enter a career as a supervisor or manager in childcare
  • Supporting childrens learning and development. Gathering information about children for all relevant stakeholders, recording observations and applying specialised knowledge, analysis and theoretical perspectives in a range of diverse contexts. Using this information to inform planning for the child
  • Leading the design and implementation of inclusive curriculum that includes stimulating learning experiences that honour the voice, culture and rights of the child

Many campuses across TAFE NSW simulate working conditions of a regulated education and care service in their Professional Practice Centres. These Centres use workplace policies and procedures, documentation, equipment and resources - and give students the opportunity to work with babies, children and families from the local community to enhance learning.

If your campus does not have a Professional Practice Centre, other opportunities will be provided to practice your real work activities.

Qualified educators in early childhood are highly sought after with workers who hold higher level qualifications being the most in demand. There is a strong Government focus on the importance of early childhood education. Current policy initiatives suggest that funding is likely to increase with a strong Government focus on the early years of childhood.

The NSW Early Childhood Workforce Strategy has focused on promoting the work of early childhood educators in relation to more flexibility in course outcomes and better publicity in the community about early childhood educators as a respected career.
