Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development. In this course you will undertake:
- Written theory assessments - for example, drawing plans to client specifications
- Practical skill assessments - for example, creating and fabricating detailed shop fitments and decorations
All assessments are completed through a combination of in-class and outside class study, research and preparation.
The Certificate II in Construction Pathways is an entry level, pre-apprentice qualification that provides limited exposure to simulated or real world experiences. It covers your foundational skills and sets you up for success for trade level Certificate III qualifications. This may be an option before enrolling into shopfitting.
This course, the Certificate III, provides real world exposure where youll apply what you're learning in simulated environments. This is the recognised apprenticeship qualification level for those people wanting to work in this specialised trade field. It establishes your foundation knowledge and skills and is the industries accepted apprenticeship qualification.
There is no Certificate IV pathway directly from the Certificate III in Shopfitting. However, as this course is a specialisation there are opportunities for employment in this niche industry.
You will gain hands-on experience in:
- Cutting and joining a variety of materials such as timber, plastic, glass and metal
- Working with hand tools and equipment
- Using specific machines and equipment to produce specific customer products
You will work on real world projects, such as:
- Liaising with clients to understand shop requirements
- Preparing and designing plans for contract
- Installing fittings in a variety of business situations
TAFE NSW offers you a range of online and on-campus study environments - industry specific computer rooms, simulated workplaces, study areas, presentation areas and general student facilities - to enhance your learning and employability.
Throughout your course, you will have access to computers, the internet, digital devices, library resources and industry specific workshops which are equipped with a variety of tools.
This qualification is in a skill shortage area of building construction - specialised customer projects. Shopfitters are sought after by employers as large projects reach fit-out stage and older buildings are refurbished. This course provides you entry into a specialised niche, where you may work in commercial chain stores and shopping centres such as Westfield, or in specialty and novelty stores. These can include banks, bars, boutique stores and restaurants.
The Certificate III in Shopfitting is in an area of skills shortage. Retail businesses and independent clients are searching for shopfitters, however the industry is unable to supply this demand. This course will equip you with the skills you need to be qualified and ready to start your career in the specialised trade.
