The Certificate III in Plumbing is an entry level qualification and once you have completed this training you can register as a journeyman plumber with NSW Fair Trading. At this level, you will gain a strong foundation of plumbing skills through formal training with TAFE NSW and on-the-job training with your employer.

If your goal is to own and operate your own plumbing business, you will need to continue your study with the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services.

The Certificate IV focuses on management and supervisory skills to oversee a team of plumbers, either in your own business or as part of a wider team. This specialist plumbing training will also advance your skills in the reading and interpretation of plans and specifications, the identification of hazards and WHS risks, the carrying out of work-based risk control processes, and the estimation and costing of work. You will qualify for lucrative work as a specialist plumbing contractor.

You need to complete the Certificate III before enrolling into the Certificate IV.

You will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Bending and joining pipes
  • Welding, laying, installing and joining of underground pipe services
  • Marking out and installing roof rainwater components

You will learn in workshops and purpose-built facilities including simulated kitchens and bathrooms. Being able to work in these environments will give you hands-on experience in installing hot and cold water pipe services, installing below and above ground drainage services and complements what you will learn in your workplace training.

Some of your practical activities take place in a simulated workshop environment while others take place in your workplace. You will undertake the theoretical component of the course work in our TAFE NSW campus classrooms.

This qualification is in a high demand skill shortage area of building construction and maintenance.

With an increase in infrastructure around the state, there is a shortage of plumbers in metropolitan and regional NSW. Generally, employers were unable to fill vacancies in metropolitan and regional NSW. There has been a shortage of plumbers in NSW since 2013.
