Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

For each unit of competency, you will undertake:

  • Theory assessments: Short answer, multiple choice, quizzes
  • Practical assessments: Demonstrations under observation

The Certificate III level course is the entry-level qualification that blends the surveying and spatial information services disciplines. You will gain an understanding of spatial information principles, basic data gathering and operating surveying equipment.

This course, the Certificate IV level, is where you will gain the practical skills to use extensive functionality within spatial information software and data management.

The Diploma builds on your technical skills to work in higher-level analyst and management roles. You will plan and deliver on spatial related projects, develop higher-level spatial analysis skills, and build budgeting, leadership and team management capabilities.

There are no excursions included in this course, but attending the block release camp will provide you with practical experience and exposure to what is expected in industry.

You will gain hands-on skills in:

  • Collecting, storing, quality-assuring and analysing spatial data
  • Using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
  • Using remote Pilot Aircraft System (RPAS) technology
  • Using Geographic Information System (GIS) software

TAFE NSW is known for delivering theory along with practical, hands-on learning. You will work on projects in simulated environments that are contextualised to real world situations, including:

  • Fire management: Collect data with GNISS, flora and fauna mapping, monitor wildfire activity, annual planning cycles around planned burning
  • Local Government: Incorporate data on property boundaries to plan flood zones and plan urban growth

TAFE NSW offers you a range of online and on campus study environments - industry specific computer rooms, simulated workplaces, study areas, presentation areas and general student facilities - to enhance your learning and employability.

Its important to remember that you will need a suitable study set-up at home that ideally includes dual monitors. You will also need GIS software to complete some course components, which depending on the software you choose, is either free or can be purchased at an educational discount.

You will be provided with IT equipment and spatial technology including GNSS and RPAS to use during your block release periods.

Spatial information deals with where something is located and why it is located there. For this reason, this knowledge is applicable across most industry sectors. We know that our smartphones are equipped to answer a simple query of where the nearest coffee shop is located. We need professionals who can assist with town planning, environmental management, Defence, asset management and real estate in their decision-making around location. Drones are now being used to collect data that is used by spatial professionals.
