Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned, and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.
In this course you will undertake:

  • Practical assessments: held in performances spaces and computer labs and project based assessments
  • Written assessments: knowledge tests about the music industry

This course, the Certificate III, is a great introductory course if you have been playing or singing for at least a year. You will get an understanding of the music industry and the basic skills and knowledge required for entry-level employment. This course is also available as a school-based apprenticeship and is also a good refresher course if you have been out of the industry for a few years.

The Certificate IV in Music Industry requires intermediate levels of experience in one of three streams, or you can choose the general Certificate IV that covers a range of areas including the performance, sound production and music business. At this level, you need to be able to work on your own and be self-motivated and directed.

At Diploma level, you can choose from a Diploma of Music with a specialisation in Performance, Sound Production (there are two streams within this) or Music Business.

Depending on your campus location, you may be involved in excursions that take you behind the scenes in the music industry. We also invite guest lecturers from the music industry to join us and add an extra dimension to your learning.

You will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Performing in front of an audience
  • Creating music using music software and hardware
  • Setting up small PA systems and live sound

TAFE NSW is known for delivering theory alongside practical, hands-on skills. You will learn by working on real world projects, such as:

  • Learning a set of songs and performing them live
  • Putting on a gig
  • Composing music
