Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned, and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development. This course has a good balance of practical and written assessments as well as project work.

The Certificate III in Music Industry (Performance) is an entry level course that prepares you for higher level study and increased job outcomes. When you graduate you could find work in assistant roles or entry level positions in the music industry. This course gives you a broad range of skills that build on your ability as an instrumentalist, vocalist or composer/songwriter.

The Certificate IV in Music Industry (Performance) teaches you a broad range of skills that build on your natural talent as an instrumentalist, vocalist or composer/songwriter. You will get an introduction to the structure of the music industry including the different job roles available, music genres and copyright. It is not an entry requirement, however it is ideal if students undertaking the Certificate IV have completed the Certificate III in Music Industry (Performance) and have either the ability to play an instrument, perform as a vocalist or compose music or songs (or perhaps you have all three?).

The Diploma of Music Industry (Performance) is a great program for anyone who has a solid grounding in music or has music industry experience and wants to take their skills and knowledge to a higher level. It is highly recommended that you have completed your Certificate IV in Music Industry (Performance) or have equivalent skills and knowledge (this may be assessed by an audition or submission of a portfolio).

The Advanced Diploma of Music Industry (Performance) will take your skills, knowledge and experience beyond the level of diploma courses, and help you become a professional musician, singer, or songwriter. It is highly recommended that you have completed your Diploma in Music Industry (Performance) or have equivalent skills and knowledge (this may be assessed by an audition or submission of a portfolio). Depending on your skill level and interests, you will typically have the opportunity to make a professional recording that is ready for distribution.

Depending on your campus location, you may be involved in excursions that take you behind the scenes in the music industry. We also invite guest lecturers from the music industry to join us and add an extra dimension to your learning.

You will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Instrument and vocal technique
  • Operating a small digital audio based studio
  • Using music software such as Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton or Sibelius

TAFE NSW is known for delivering theory along with practical, real-world skills. To enhance your learning and give you real performance experience to add to your repertoire you will:

  • Create and record music
  • Prepare for, and put on, live shows

TAFE NSW has a range of facilities including rehearsal rooms, music production labs, recording studios and live venues. Most locations have a selection of instruments and other accessories for you to practise on.
