Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development. In this course you will undertake:
- Knowledge assessments: short answer questions, a closed book exam and multiple choice questions
- Practical assessments: skills assessments and oral questions on a vessel or in a simulated work environment
The Certificate II Maritime Operations (Coxswain 1) is the certificate for you if you are working in the industry and want to pursue a career path in operations and commanding a vessel. You need complete task books and provide evidence of your previous sea experience.
This course, the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master Up to 24 Meters Near Coastal), is where youll gain all your underpinning experience in safely operating a vessel up to 24 meters. You will need to complete multiple practical assessments, knowledge tests and provide evidence of previous sea experience.
The Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master Up to 35 Meters Near Coastal), is where you'll gain all your underpinning experience in safely operating a vessel up to 35 meters. You will need to complete multiple practical assessments, knowledge tests and provide evidence of previous sea experience.
This course is very practical with much of your learning, and all of your practical assessments, occurring in a range of authentic simulated workplace environments. A floating boat (minimum of 7.5 metres) is used to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to work effectively as a master on a vessel.
You will gain hands-on experience in:
- Surviving at sea using survival equipment - an Olympic size swimming pool will be utilised where you will be able to collect, manage and interpret information to use lifesaving equipment
- Following safety procedures when abandon vessel orders are given
- Handling strategies to navigate survival craft in rough sea conditions
- Minimising the risk of fires on board a vessel with simulated firefighting scenarios
- Identifying and creating different knots and hitches
No real-world projects are included in this course, however, you will learn in real world, simulated environments.
TAFE NSW offers you a range of study environments to enhance your learning in this course, including:
- TAFE NSW campus classrooms
- Olympic sized swimming pool for survival practical and firefighting facilities for situations relating to emergency procedures
- A floating boat (minimum of 7.5 meters) used to practice skills needed to work as a master on a vessel
