Assessments and assignments are a great way to evaluate how much you have learned and to refine your techniques and practices. This course offers a range of assessment methods for you to shine:

  • Theory based knowledge assessments
  • Practical based skills assessments
    Some of your practical activities take place in a simulated workshop environment and if you are studying as a trainee, will also take place in your workplace.
    You will undertake the theoretical component of the course work in our TAFE NSW campus classrooms where you will also have access to an online facilitated environment.

The Certificate II in Furniture Making will provide you with a broad overview of basic furnishing techniques. You will also learn participation, teamwork and communication skills to get you ready for further study and a career in furnishing manufacturing industry. This course can be studied through a traineeship program or as a non-trainee.

This course, the Certificate III in Furniture Making, will teach you to perform a wide range of tasks in furniture making, including interpretation of specifications drawings, use of specialised machines and hand techniques. This course can be studied through a traineeship program or as a non-trainee.

You will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Manual and Computer Aided Drawing (CAD)
  • Using basic power tools and hand tools
  • Examining drawings, work orders and sample parts to determine specifications
  • Selecting and working with materials such as timber, veneers, particle board and synthetic wood
  • The mark out, cut and shaping of timber products
  • Working from detailed drawings and specifications to make furniture
  • Creating fittings where fine detail is required
  • Assembling furniture
  • Fitting hinges, locks, catches, drawers and shelves
  • Making frames for chairs and couches

You will work on real world furniture projects and make a range of cabinetry and furniture from timber and manufactured board.

Projects can include:

  • Creating coffee tables
  • Magazine racks
  • Smaller side tables
  • Timber boxes, with dove tailed/biscuit joinery

The Certificate III in Furniture Making leads you into areas of industry demand such as furniture and cabinet making. Demand for cabinet making work and cabinet makers is highly dependent on the strength of the construction industry. Construction is booming across NSW and as a result, there has been a shortage of skilled Cabinet Makers (Furniture) in metropolitan and regional NSW since 2014.

This qualification may provide you with a pathway into new and emerging technologies such as automation used by larger manufacturers. This course includes skills and knowledge in the use of emerging technology such as Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) machine operations and (CAD) computer aided drawing.
