Demand for cabinet making work and cabinet makers is highly dependent on the strength of the construction industry. Construction is booming across NSW and as a result, there has been a shortage of skilled Cabinet Makers (Furniture) in metropolitan and regional NSW since 2014.

This Certificate III course is a trade qualification. This means when you successfully graduate, you are recognised across Australia by industry as a trade qualified Cabinet Maker (Furniture).

We also offer the Certificate III in Cabinet Making (Kitchens and Bathrooms) stream. The electives vary between Furniture and Kitchens and Bathrooms and align with workplace requirements for each of these.

Through this course youll gain hands-on experience with:

  • Manual and Computer Aided Drawing (CAD)
  • Using basic power tools and hand tools
  • Examining drawings, work orders and sample parts to determine specifications
  • Selecting and working with materials: timber, veneers, particle board and synthetic wood
  • Marking out, cutting and shaping timber products
  • Working from detailed drawings and specifications to make furniture
  • Creating fittings for boats, caravans and other items where fine detail is required
  • Assembling furniture
  • Fitting hinges, locks, catches, drawers and shelves
  • Making frames for chairs and couches

You will work on real-world furniture projects and make a range of cabinetry and furniture from timber and manufactured board.

Activity in the building construction industry drives demand for cabinetmakers. The skills shortage of qualified cabinetmakers was identified in 2014 and continues through to today.

This qualification may provide you with a pathway into new and emerging technologies such as automation and robotics used by larger manufacturers. This course includes skills and knowledge in the use of emerging technology such as Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) machine operations and (CAD) computer aided drawing.
