This course, the Certificate III level qualification, is the ideal course for anyone working as a stablehand in charge of daily operations in a harness or thoroughbred racing stable where you care for racehorses. It provides real world exposure where you'll apply what you are learning in real or simulated environments. You will practice your skills at an intermediate level.

The Certificate IV in Racing (Racehorse Trainer) (Thoroughbred) will help you will build on your skills and experience with thoroughbred horses, and horse-racing. You will develop a sound understanding of how the training and racing of horses operates in the industry. Your knowledge will extend to management and supervisory skills including managing staff, finances, budgets, equipment and animals.

There are lots of opportunities to be race ready when you study the Certificate II in Racing Industry (Stablehand).

Alongside visiting a working stable, an equine veterinary clinic and a horse stud, you will also have the chance to dress up in your best for a full day out at the races. Take a behind the scenes tour of racing facilities, stables and racetracks and get to meet people working in the horse industry who will give you valuable industry insights.

Other excursions could include attending yearling sales, races, morning track work and visiting stud breeding farms.

This is a hands-on, practical course and you will have lots of interactions with horses. You will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Handling horses and supervising others to handle horses
  • Grooming horses
  • Implementing feeding programs and feeding horses
  • Loading horses onto floats and transporting them to the racetracks
  • Exercising horses
  • Implementing stable operations
  • Providing first aid to horses
  • Riding horses
  • Implementing fitness regimes for horses

You will learn in simulated environments on a TAFE NSW campus and during your one day a week work placement. If you are a trainee you will get your experience at your workplace.

Real world projects include:

  • Preparing horses for racing
  • Transporting them to the tracks
  • Riding and exercising the horses

This course is delivered at TAFE NSW campuses that have horses and horse facilities available that simulate an equine workplace. These include:

  • Stables
  • Arenas
  • Yards
  • Race tracks
  • Paddocks
  • Horses

You will also complete work experience in working stables and racetracks.

From working on horse breeding studs right through to the racetrack, workers are needed to care for horses and there are lots of job opportunities for stablehands in the industry.

The thoroughbred racing industry is one of Australia's oldest and most lucrative, with a worth of $9 billion. With the industry providing more than 70,000 jobs nationally, there is a need for skilled employees to ensure racing develops and prospers. As an entry level qualification this course is a great stepping stone into varied careers in the industry, from caring for the horses, to the management and administration of the facilities, to working in the areas of breeding, training, sales and racing.
