Course overview

Course Description

This course is for people who want be competent in supporting the design,
development and programming of basic digital games briefs as part of a
larger development team. The qualification has a small suite of core units
with a specialist group of games design electives.

Career Opportunities

Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:
- assistant designer;
- support games developer;
- assistant graphic/media designer;
- support digital media developer;
- support web designer.

Articulation

When you finish this course, you may be eligible for advanced standing in
ICA50211 Diploma of Digital and Interactive Games, or a range of other Diploma
qualifications.

 There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Pathways into the qualification

Preferred pathways for candidates considering this qualification include:
-    after achieving ICA30111 Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and
Technology, or other relevant qualifications or units equivalent to the
core of ICA30111
-    after achieving a Year 12 certificate and relevant ICT experience equivalent
to the following units of competency:
-    ICAICT201A Use computer operating systems and hardware
-    ICAICT202A Work and communicate effectively in an IT environment
-    ICAICT203A Operate application software packages
-    ICAWEB201A Use social media tools for collaboration and engagement
-    with demonstrated vocational experience in a range of ICT and games
development environments.

What you must do to complete the course

The course structure below shows what you must do to complete this course.
units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.
 
You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course reflects the packaging requirements for ICA40911 Certificate
IV in Digital and Interactive Games (specialising in Design), (Release 2),
the ICA11 Information and Communication Technology Training Package
(Release 2.0). The rules from the ICA11 (Release 2.0) are as follows:
 
Packaging rules
===============
 
Total number of units - 16
 
4 core units plus
12 elective units
 
The elective units consist of:
 
- 5 units from one of the following specialist elective groups:
 
* Group A Design
* Group B Programming
* Group C Art
 
- of the remaining units:
 
* up to 7 may be from the specialist elective groups below or from Group D
general elective units below or elsewhere in ICA11
* up to 3 may be from elsewhere in ICA11 or from any other Training
Package or accredited course at Certificate IV or Diploma level.
 
The elective units chosen must be relevant to the work outcome and meet
local industry needs.
 
 
To satisfy the Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
A total of 16 units must be completed - 4 compulsory plus 12 electives
 
Group 1 - Core Units

All 4 core units must be completed
 
Group 2 - Elective Units listed in ICA40911
-------------------------------------------
This group consist of 4 subgroups. You must complete 5 Design specialist
elective units from subgroup 1.
 
The remaining 7 units may be selected from any of the subgroups 1 - 4 as
specified below, or Group 3. Note that only 3 units can be completed from
Group 3.
 
Subgroup 1 Group A Design - at least 5 units must be completed
Subgroup 2 Group B Programming - no more than 7 units may be selected
Subgroup 3 Group C Art - no more than 7 units may be selected
Subgroup 4 Group D General Electives or elsewhere in ICA11 - no more than 7
units may be selected
 
Group 3 - Other electives units from elsewhere in ICA11 or at
Cert IV or Diploma level from Training Packages or accredited courses

No more than 3 units may be selected from this group.
 
 
NOTES FOR STUDENTS

1. LEARNER SUPPORT
Students who require support to meet their learning goals may co-enrol in
the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
 
2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
