Course overview

Course Description

This qualification is for those who want to gain the skills, knowledge and
attitudes needed to develop and communicate creative design and
illustration solutions across the areas of print and digital design. You
will learn to combine technical, creative and conceptual skills to create
illustrations that meet client requirements and solve a range of visual
communication challenges, and will be able to analyse and synthesise
information from a range of sources to generate design solutions.
 
To enter this qualification you will need to already have a sound
understanding of design theory and practice. These skills and knowledge
may have been gained through personal or work experience or through
completion of formal study, such as the Certificate IV in Design.

Career Opportunities

You will be able to work as designers and illustrators in many different
commercial and community contexts across both print and digital media, working
in junior or generalist roles, including areas such advertising and promotion,
art direction.

Articulation

Graduates may engage in further learning in vocational education through the
CUV60411 Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design (10422), the CUV60411 Advanced
Diploma of Graphic Design (Illustration) (11522) higher education qualifications
in graphic design and broader areas of practice, such as digital media or other
design disciplines.
When you finish this course, you may be eligible to apply for entry into a TAFE
NSW Higher Education course.

Entry Requirements

 To enter this qualification, people must be able to demonstrate graphic design
skills to support learning at Diploma level. In particular they must be able
to provide evidence of their ability to:
- produce multiple examples of graphic design work that respond effectively to
different design challenges
- engage with the design process by developing design solutions through
research, reflection and the generation and refinement of ideas
- produce typography that supports the overall design solution
- show examples of computer skills using graphic design industry software
which may include multi-page layout and digital manipulation
- apply knowledge of graphic design trends and technologies.
These skills and knowledge may have been acquired through personal or work
experience, or through formal study.
Pathways into the qualification
-------------------------------
It is recommended that people entering this qualification possess a Certificate
IV qualification(or equivalent vocational expertise) in a field related to
graphic design, such as printing and graphic arts. Depending upon specific
pathways and competencies achieved, other qualifications in design,
information technology and screen and media may also be relevant.
The Preparatory Skill Set for Professional Graphic Design Practice is also a
suitable pathway.

What you must do to complete the course

The course structure below shows what you must do to complete this course.
units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.
 
You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course reflects the packaging requirements for CUV50311 Diploma of
Graphic Design within  the Visual Arts, Craft and Design Training Package
(CUV11 version 1). The rules from CUV11 v.1 are as follows:
 
Total number of units = 19
9 core units plus
10 elective units
 
The elective units consist of:
* 6 units packaged as outlined in the structure
Of the remaining 4 units:
* up to 4 may be from the list of elective units below
* up to 4 may be from a Diploma or above in any currently endorsed Training
Package
*  up to 3 may be from an accredited course at Diploma level or above.
 
To achieve an illustration outcome, you will study a pathway of
units/modules with an illustration focus.
 
The elective units chosen must be relevant to the work outcome and meet
local industry needs.
 
To satisfy the Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
A total of 19 units must be completed - 9 compulsory plus 10 electives
 
Group 1 - Core Units

All 9 core units must be completed
 
Group 2 - Elective Units
--------------------------------------------
At least 6 units must be completed. Up to 10 units may be completed
 
 
Group 3 - Units from a Diploma level qualification in any currently
endorsed Training Package

Up to 4 units may be completed.
 
 
Group 4 - Pre-requisite Units
--------------------------------------------
Units in this group do not count towards the number of units required for
course completion. These units are pre-requisite for electives in this
qualification AND/OR provide additional skills and knowledge related to
your learning area.

NOTES FOR STUDENTS

1. LEARNER SUPPORT
Students who require support to meet their learning goals may co-enrol in
the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
 
2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
 
4. PREREQUISITE UNITS
Units in this course have prerequisites that must be completed in a lower
level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Training Package or consult your teacher for information about
prerequisites to elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve CUV50311 Diploma of Graphic Design (Illustration) (TAFE NSW course
11518), learners are required to complete 19 units of competency, comprising:
