Course overview

Course Description

This course is for people employed, or seeking employment, in the
manufacturing industry who want to work as metallurgists, or related
vocations.  

You will have the opportunity to choose from a range of electives, such as:
- Prepare and examine metallographic samples
- Apply basic chemistry principles to metallurgy
- Calculate and predict chemical outcomes in metallurgical situations
- Recommend a refractory for an application
- Select metal forming process
- Monitor blast furnace operations
- Monitor primary steel making process
- Monitor secondary steelmaking operations
- Apply metallurgy principles and practice to determine metal forming and
shaping processes.
 
The skills and knowledge gained will enhance your ability to contribute to
the local, regional, national and/or international competitiveness of your
manufacturing sector.
 
The course offers a large selection of units for you to choose from, giving
you the opportunity to be skilled across a wide range of metallurgical, and
allied, areas. The numbers and level of units of competency that must be
achieved is appropriate for people who are employed as supervisors/managers
working at Level VI of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Career Opportunities

Metallurgist, production supervisor/manager, quality supervisor/manager, or
related occupations in metal, or allied, industries.

Articulation

If you have completed the Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology
(Metallurgy) or the Diploma of Manufacturing Technology (Metallurgy), you can
gain full credit for any unit you have achieved as long as the competency is
still current and it is valid in this course.

This course reflects the packaging rules for MSA60108 Advanced Diploma of
Manufacturing Technology (Release 5) with a specialisation in Metallurgy,
from the MSA07 Manufacturing Training Package (Release 8.3).
 
The qualification packaging rules state:
 
To be awarded an Advanced Diploma of Manufacturing Technology competency
must be achieved in thirty one (31) units of competency:
* six (6) core units of competency
* twenty five (25) elective units of competency chosen as described for the
metallurgy specialisation
 
Metallurgy specialist stream
----------------------------
Select twenty five (25) elective units:
* a minimum of fourteen (14) units listed in MSA60108
* the balance may be chosen from Group B
 
Note:
* at least six of the 14 metallurgy elective units must be coded MSATCM5---
* the unit MSATCM406A Apply basic chemistry principles to metallurgy must
also be selected if it has not already been completed as part of a lower
qualification.
 
NOTE:
* All units from each specialist stream are available in Group B as General
Electives
* Five elective units may also be chosen from other qualifications in this
Training Package, other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses.
These units must be available for inclusion at Diploma or Advanced Diploma
level.
 
Prerequisites
-------------
Units marked with an asterisk in the qualification packaging rules have
one or more prerequisite requirements. The prerequisites for these units
are to be counted in the total number of units required in the elective
group. Please refer to the individual units for details.
 
 
To satisfy the Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
31 units must be completed - 6 core plus 25 electives

You must conplete at least six (6) units from this subgroup.
 
Subgroup 2: Metallurgy compulsory unit
You must complete the unit MSATCM406A 'Apply basic chemistry
principles to metallurgy'.
 
Subgroup 3: Other Metallurgy Specialist units

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve MSA60108 Advanced Diploma of Manufacturing Technology (TAFE NSW
Course 17929),learners are required to complete 31 units of competency
as follows:
 
- all 6 core units from Group 1
- a total of 25 elective units, including
at least 14 specialist elective units from Group 2
a maximum of 11 units from Group 3
