Course overview

Course Description

This course is for apprentices who need to acquire the skills and knowledge
associated with the manufacture of free standing furniture. You will learn
how to use furniture making hand and power tools, prepare and construct a
range of furniture items in solid timber and manufactured board, carry out
measurements and calculations, and read and interpret work documents. You
will also learn about occupational health and safety, customer
communication and working with others.
 

Career Opportunities

Cabinetmaking tradesperson, furniture maker, workshop manager or self-employment
in the industry.

Pathways from the qualification
-------------------------------
Further training pathways from this qualification include LMF40508 Certificate
IV in Furniture Design and Technology and relevant supervisory, management or
competitive manufacturing qualifications.

Entry Requirements

 There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
However, the learner must be employed or have access to a cabinetmaking
workplace to be able to gain sufficient experience to successfully achieve the
units of competence requirements.
Pathways into the qualification
-------------------------------
This qualification may be accessed by direct entry. Credit can be granted
towards this qualification by those who have completed LMF20309 Certificate II
in Furniture Making or achieved equivalent industry experience.

You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course meets the packaging requirements for LMF32109 Certificate III
in Cabinet Making - specialising in Furniture, within the Furnishing
Training Package (LMF02, V8). The rules from LMF02 V8 Training Package are
 
To be awarded the Certificate III in Cabinet Making, specialising in
Furniture, competency must be achieved in twenty eight (28) units of
competency  

- six (6) core units of competency
- twenty-two (22) elective units of competency from Groups A to F,
including . a minimum of one (1) unit from Group A
. a minimum of eight (8) units from Groups B and D (Pathway 1 - Furniture)
. up to thirteen (13) units from Groups E and F
. Group F: up to five (5) relevant units may be chosen from units not
already selected from Groups A to E, or units available in this Training
Package or other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses. Those
units must be aligned at Certificate II level (maximum 1 unit),
Certificate III level (maximum 5 units) or Certificate IV level (maximum 1
unit).
 
Units selected from other Training Packages and accredited courses via
Group F must be relevant to the qualification outcome and not duplicate
units available within this qualification.
 
If Competitive Manufacturing units are chosen (identified as MSACM in the
code), these should only be selected on the basis of work requirements.
 
Note: Where prerequisite units apply, these have been listed, and must be
considered in the total number of units.
 
Additional qualification advice
-------------------------------
There are two pathways offered within the Certificate III in Cabinet Making
targeting the skill requirements of:
 
Pathway 1. Free-standing furniture makers (this course, TAFE NSW course
number 19209)
Pathway 2. Kitchen and bathroom cabinet makers and installers (TAFE NSW
course number 19299).
 
Licensing Considerations
------------------------
Depending on the State and Territory where work is undertaken licensing may
relate to this qualification where the candidate is required to work on
site assisting in kitchen and bathroom installation.
 
To satisfy the Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured to address requirements for Pathway 1 specialising in Furniture
follows:
 
28 units must be completed - 6 core plus 22 electives

2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
 
4. PREREQUISITE UNITS
Some units in this course may have prerequisites that must be completed in
lower level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Training Package or consult your teacher for information about
prerequisites to elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve qualification LMF32109 Certificate III in Cabinet Making
specialising in Furniture (TAFE NSW course 19209), learners are required to
complete 28 units of competency comprising:
 
- All 6 core units from Group 1
- 22 elective units from Groups 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
- At least one unit must come from Group 2, and at least eight units from Group
3. A maximum of five units may come from Group 6.
