Course overview

Course Description

This course is for people who want to develop fundamental skills in
furniture design and technology, and to prepare for further study at
Diploma level.  

On completion of this course, you will be able to establish a furniture
design brief, produce conceptual design drawings, generate innovative
furniture design solutions and research and select furniture materials and
technology.  

The course is streamed to reflect two primary occupational outcomes:
- fine furniture making with a focus on skills required to design and
  produce individual fine furniture for display or custom production;
- furniture design with a focus on skills required to design furniture
  for volume production.
 
Depending on the elective stream chosen, you will also develop a range of
specialised knowledge and skills required for successful employment in
either of these areas.

Entry level or assistant furniture designer.

Articulation

Further training pathways from this qualification may include LMF50508 Diploma
of Furniture Design and Technology (19252) and relevant supervisory,
management or competitive manufacturing qualifications.

Entry Requirements

 There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
However, it is recommended that those wishing to gain entry into the Certificate
IV in Furniture Design and Technology should have sufficient relevant skills
and knowledge to indicate likely success at this level of qualification.
Examples of evidence to support this determination could include:
- successful completion of art and/or design related subjects at secondary
or post-secondary level
- completion of a furnishing trade course or on-the-job experience
- presentation of a folio and/or an interview.
Entry to this qualification by persons without prior furnishing industry
experience or formal qualifications is permitted.
Pathways into the qualification
-------------------------------
Credit can be granted towards this qualification by those who have completed
LMF30302 Certificate III in Furniture Making or other relevant qualifications
or achieved equivalent industry experience.

top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course reflects the packaging requirements for LMF40508 Certificate
IV in Furniture Design and Technology within the Furnishing Training
Package (LMF02 version 8).
 
The qualification packaging rules state:
 
Packaging Rules
---------------
To be awarded the LMF40508 Certificate IV in Furniture Design and
Technology, competency must be achieved in nineteen (19) units of
competency.  

- six (6) core units of competency
- thirteen (13) elective units of competency
 
Note: where prerequisite units apply, these have been listed, and must be
considered in the total number of units.
 
Elective Units
--------------
Select thirteen (13) units from Groups A, B, C amd D as specified below.
 
- select one (1) unit from Group A
- select a minimum of eight (8) units from Groups B or C with at least
five (5) units in each Group being coded LMF*****
- Group D - up to four (4) relevant units can be chosen from units not
already selected from Group A, B or C, or units available in this Training
other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses. Those units must
be aligned at Certificate III level (maximum 2 units), Certificate IV level
(maximum 4 units) or Diploma level (maximum 2 units). Note that if any
units chosen from Group C have prerequisite requirements, these must be
counted  in the total number of units.
 
Units selected from other Training Packages and accredited courses via
Group D must be relevant to the qualification outcome and not duplicate
units available within this qualification.
 
If Competitive Manufacturing units are chosen (identifed as MSACM in the
code), these should only be selected on the basis of work requirements.
 
To address Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
19 units must be completed - 6 core and 13 electives
 
Group 1 - Core Units

All 6 units must be completed
 
Group 2 - Group A Elective Units listed in LMF40508

Only 1 unit must be completed. The unit may be chosen from the 2 subgroups
containing a specialist stream:
 
Subgroup 1 - Fine Furniture Making (Stream 1)
Subgroup 2 - Furniture Design (Stream 2)
 
Group 3 and Group 4 - Specialist Electives listed in LMF40508

You must choose only one (1) group from either Group 3 or 4 and complete
the number of units as specified in the specialist group you have selected.
 
Group 3 - Group B Specialist Elective Units

Subgroup 1 - Group B "LMF" units - at least 5 units must be completed
Sungroup 2 - Group B other units

NOTES FOR STUDENTS

1. LEARNER SUPPORT

the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
 
2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
 
4. PREREQUISITE UNITS
Some units in this course may have prerequisites that must be completed in
lower level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Training Package or consult your teacher for information about
prerequisites to elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve LMF40508 Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology (TAFE
NSW course 19215), learners are required to complete 19 units of competency,
comprising:
 
-  All 6 core units from Group 1
-  A total of 13 elective units including:
* only 1 elective unit from Group 2
* 1 specialist group from either Group 3 or Group 4
* a maximum of 4 units from Group 5
