Course overview

Course Description

This qualification is for persons who want to work in the creative arts -
music, performing and entertainment industries as sound mixers/technicians
or sound recordists.
 
You will develop specialist knowledge and skills to analyse and evaluate
information from a variety of sources to establish and manage production
requirements needed to work safely, to manage your own work, collaborate
with and provide guidance to others and to implement copyright
arrangements.  

From the specialist elective units you can learn to operate and maintain a
range of audio/sound equipment and plan, record, mix and edit sound. From
the other elective units you can develop ICT/digital, rigging,
post-production or small and micro business skills for a career in the
music and creative arts industries.
 
Pathways into the qualification
 
* CUS30109 Certificate III in Music
* CUS30209 Certificate III in Technical Production
* CUF30107 Certificate III in Media,
* CUE30203 Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events
(Technical   Operations),
or
* with limited or no vocational experience and without a relevant lower
level   qualification.
 

Career Opportunities

Relevant job roles may include working as a sound mixer/technician or as sound
recordist.
 

Articulation

When you finish this course you can continue on to further specialised studies
at Diploma level, e.g. the Diploma of Sound Production (19371); Diploma of
Screen and Media (19237) or the Diploma of Live Production, Theatre and Events
(Technical Operations) (19059).

Entry Requirements

 Candidates may enter the qualification with limited or no vocational experience
and without a relevant lower level qualification. However, entry to the
qualification may follow successful completion of CUS30109 Certificate III in
Music, CUS30209 Certificate III in Technical Production, CUF30107 Certificate
III in Media, or CUE30203 Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events
(Technical Operations).

The course structure below shows what you must do to complete this course.
units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.
 
You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course reflects the packaging requirements for CUS40209 Certificate
IV in Sound Production within the Music Training Package (CUS09 - V1.2).
The rules from CUS09 Training Package are as follows:
 
Packaging Rules
 
Total number of units = 14
3 core units
7 Group A units
4 elective units
 
2 elective units must be selected from the Group A and/or Group B units
listed below.
 
The remaining 2 elective units may be selected from the Group A and/or
Group B units listed below or any unit of competency from any endorsed
Training Package or accredited course.
 
If not listed below, 1 of these units may be selected from a Diploma level
qualification.
 
No more than 3 Group A or Group B units previously achieved as part of
another qualification may be counted towards the qualification. Electives
must be relevant to the work outcome, local industry requirements and be
at an appropriate qualification level.
 
To satisfy the training package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
Group 1 - Core Units

ALL 3 core units must be completed
 
Group 2 - Group A Specialist Units listed in CUS40209
-----------------------------------------------------
At least 7 specialist units must be completed from subgroups 1 to 6. The
subgroups represent each of the specialist areas outlined in the training
package.
 
Group 3 - Group B Elective Units listed in CUS40209
---------------------------------------------------
4 elective units must be completed. At least 2 elective units must be
completed from the subgroups within this group 3 and/or from the subgroups
above. The remaining 2 elective units may be completed from the subgroups
within this group 3 and/or from the subgroups within group 2 above and/or
from group 4 below which contains units of competency from any endorsed
training package or accredited course. Likewise, a maximum of 1 elective
unit at Diploma level from any training package or accredited course may
be selected from group 4 below as part of the requirement to complete 4
elective units.  

Group 4 - Elective Units from any training package or accredited course

competency from any endorsed training package or accredited course.
 
Subgroup 1 Electives from any training package or accredited course

A maximum of 2 elective units may be completed from this subgroup which

accredited course.  

Subgroup 2 Diploma electives from any training package or accredited course

A maximum of 1 elective unit may be completed from this subgroup which
contains units of competency at Diploma level from any endorsed training
package or accredited course.
 
The context for this qualification varies, and this must guide the
selection of elective units. The training package provides examples
designed to assist in the selection of appropriate electives for
particular outcomes at this level, but they are in no way prescriptive.
 
National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work
applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work. Completion of the
following units is required for certification at either basic,
intermediate or advanced levels.  

CPCCLDG3001A Licence to perform dogging
CPCCLRG3001A Licence to perform rigging basic level
CPCCLRG3002A Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
CPCCLRG4001A Licence to perform rigging advanced level.
 
National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the
definition of construction work. If so, people entering the construction
site are required to complete the general induction training program
specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for
Construction Work (Australian Safety Compensation Council, May 2007).
 
Achievement of the unit 'CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction
industry' from the CPC08 Construction and Plumbing Services Integrated
Framework Training Package fulfils this requirement. Information on
occupational licensing and its intersection with vocational education and

NOTES FOR STUDENTS

1. LEARNER SUPPORT
Students who require support to meet their learning goals may co-enrol in
the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
 
2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
 
4. PREREQUISITE UNITS
Some units in this course may have prerequisites that must be completed in
lower level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Training Package or consult your teacher for information about
prerequisites to elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve the qualification CUS40209 Certificate IV in Sound Production (TAFE
NSW course 19368), learners are required to complete 14 units of competency,
comprising:
 
3 compulsory units from group 1
7 specialist units from group 2
4 elective units. 2 elective units must be completed from groups 2 and/or 3. The
remaining two elective units may be selected from groups 2 and/or 3 and/or 4.
