Course overview

Course Description

This course is for people who work or want to work as laboratory
technicians or technical officers in biological/environmental laboratories.
You will learn to conduct a range of sampling and testing activities that
require the application of broad scientific-technical knowledge and skills
in areas such as the detection and quantification of chemical substances
in animal and plant materials and environmental samples; the preparation
of plant and animal materials for microscopic examination, identification
and in some cases storage and display; and the study of plants and animals
in the laboratory and field.
These skills are necessary when carrying out research and testing in the
environmental and biological areas.

Career Opportunities

Laboratory technician or technical officer in a biological or environmental
laboratory or related area.


Further training pathways from this qualification include MSL60109 Advanced
Diploma of Laboratory Operations.
Career paths for senior technicians, technical specialists and laboratory
supervisors are  becoming increasingly constrained unless technicians undertake
university study. With this in  mind, particular attention has been given to
stating the critical aspects of competency and  essential knowledge required for
each unit of competency in sufficient detail to maximise  articulation and
credit transfer arrangements between the vocational education and training
(VET) and higher education sectors.

Pathways into the qualification
This qualification may be accessed by direct entry. Credit may be granted
towards this qualification by those who have completed the MSL40109 Certificate
IV in Laboratory  Techniques. Credit for this qualification may include units
contained within relevant skill sets.

units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.
You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will

top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
This course specialises in Biological and Environmental Testing. Please
speak to your Teacher if you wish to specialise in Biotechnology; Chemical
Testing; Food Testing; Pathology Testing; or if you prefer a general
qualification with no specialisation.
This course reflects the packaging requirements for the Diploma of
Laboratory Technology (MSL50109 release 5) specialising in Biological and
Environmental Testing, from the Laboratory Operations Training Package
(MSL09 release 2.3).  

The rules from this Training Package are as follows:
To be awarded a Diploma of Laboratory Technology competency must be
achieved in a total of twenty one (21) units of competency, consisting of:
-   nine (9) core units of competency
-   twelve (12) elective units of competency
Elective units of competency
Select twelve (12) elective units from Groups A, B, C and D as specified

- a minimum of five (5) units must be selected from Group A
- the remainder may be chosen from Groups A, B, C and D, with a maximum of
(3) units from Group B, a maximum of five (5) units from Group C and a
maximum of two (2) units from Group D, to bring the total electives to
twelve (12).  

Note that four (4) of the elective units may be chosen from this Training
Package, other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses, where
those units are available at Diploma.
Units listed under core are considered essential for all technical
officers. The units listed as electives may only apply to some personnel
according to the size and scope of the particular enterprise and

To satisfy the Training Package requirements, and to suit the
specialisation of Biological and Environmental Testing, this TAFE NSW
course has been structured as follows:
A total of 21 units must be completed - 9 core plus 12 electives
Group 1 - Core Units
All 9 core units must be completed
Group 2 - Specialist Electives selected from Group A in the qualification
At least 5 units must be completed
Group 3 - Other Specialist Electives from the qualification
A maximum of 7 units may be completed from the subgroups in this group.
Subgroup 1 - Specialist Electives selected from Group B in the
qualification up to 3 units may be completed
Subgroup 2 - Specialist Electives selected from Group C in the
qualification up to 5 units may be completed
Subgroup 3 - Elective units from Group D in the qualification
up to 2 units may be completed
Students who require support to meet their learning goals may co-enrol in
the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
Some units in this course have prerequisites that must be completed in a
lower level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Package or consult your teacher for information about prerequisites to
elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve the Diploma of Laboratory Technology (MSL50109 release 5) with a
specialisation in Biological and Environmental Testing (TAFE NSW course 19415),
learners are required to complete 21 units of competency comprising:
- All 9 core units from Group 1
- 12 elective units from Groups 2 and 3, including:
. at least 5 units from Group 2
. a maximum of 3 units from Group 3 Subgroup 1
. a maximum of 5 units from Group 3 Subgroup 2
. a maximum of 2 units from Group 3 Subgroup 3.
