Course overview

Course Description

This course provides a broad and flexible package of competencies to meet
the needs of laboratory supervisors, senior technical officers and similar
personnel. These units of competency reflect the various aspects of the
work of a senior technician, which may include responsibility for
planning, allocation of tasks, monitoring of resources, coordination,
quality assurance, recording and reporting of laboratory outputs.
The course has application in a number of industry contexts - process
manufacturing, pathology services, biological and environmental services,
and food and beverage processing.

Laboratory manager/supervisor, senior laboratory technician, senior laboratory
technical officer.


Career paths for senior technicians, technical specialists and laboratory
supervisors are  becoming increasingly constrained unless technicians undertake
university study. With this in  mind, particular attention has been given to
stating the critical aspects of competency and  essential knowledge required for
each unit of competency in sufficient detail to maximise  articulation and
credit transfer arrangements between the vocational education and training
(VET) and higher education sectors.

Entry Requirements

 To enter the Advanced Diploma of Laboratory Operations, entrants must have
completed a Diploma of Laboratory Technology or be able to demonstrate
equivalent competency. It is also recommended that entrants have had an
appropriate period of employment at an occupational level commensurate with the
Diploma of Laboratory Technology prior to entry to this Advanced Diploma

What you must do to complete the course

The course structure below shows what you must do to complete this course.
units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.
You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
This course has been designed to reflect the packaging requirements for the
Advanced Diploma of Laboratory Operations MSL60109 within the Laboratory
Operations Training Package (MSL09, release 2.3). The rules from this
Training Package are as follows:
To be awarded an Advanced Diploma of Laboratory Operations competency must
achieved in a total of thirteen (13) units of competency, consisting of:
-   Seven (7) core units of competency
-   Six (6) elective units of competency
Units listed under core are considered essential for all laboratory
supervisors. The units listed as electives may only apply to some
personnel according to the size and scope of the particular enterprise and
Elective units of competency
Select six (6) elective units of competency from Groups A and B, as
specified below:
- a minimum of three (3) units must be chosen from Group A
- the remainder may be chosen from Groups A and B, to bring the total
number of electives to six (6)
Note that three (3) of the electives may be chosen from this Training
Package, other endorsed Training packages and accredited courses where
those units are available for inclusion at Advanced Diploma level.
To satisfy the Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
Group 1 - Core Units
All 7 core units must be completed.
Group 2 - Group A Elective Units listed in MSL60109
At least 3 elective units must be completed from group 2. You may select
all 6 electives from this group.
Group 3 - Other Elective Units
You may complete up to 3 units from subgroups 1 and/or 2
Subgroup 1 - Group B elective units listed in this qualification
Subgroup 2 - Units available for inclusion at Advanced Diploma level in
other endorsed Training Packages or accredited courses.
Group 4 - Prerequisite units that cannot be counted for completion
Units in this group do not count towards the number of units required for
course completion. These units are pre-requisite for electives in this
qualification, and/or provide additional skills and knowledge related to
your learning area.  

Students who require support to meet their learning goals may co-enrol in
the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
Some units in this course have prerequisites that must be completed in a
lower level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Package or consult your teacher for information about prerequisites to
elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve MSL60109 Advanced Diploma of Laboratory Operations (TAFE NSW course
number 19420), you must complete 13 units of competency comprising:
- all 7 core units from group 1
- 6 elective units from groups 2 and/or 3, including at least 3 units from
group 2.
