Course overview

Course Description

This course is for people wanting to enter or currently employed in the
civil construction industry. It is suitable for year 12 school leavers and
reflects the role of people working as designers or design
para-professionals who support professional engineers.
 
You will learn to perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy that
require the application of significant judgement in planning and the
selection of equipment, roles and techniques for yourself and others.
Specific areas covered include civil drafting and the underpinning
principles associated with civil design such as engineering mathematics,
statics and strength of materials.
 
By completing the course you will be able to apply a broad range of
technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills. Examples include
managing elements of projects such as time, risk, procurement and
continuous improvement as well as producing engineering drawings and
designs in a range of contexts.  

You will be assessed in a work environment or a simulated environment as
specified in the Resources and Infrastructure Training Package. You will be
advised of the requirements relating to accessing a workplace(s) and
relevant OHS safety requirements at enrolment.

Entry Requirements

 There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Before commencing workshop activities or on-site training and assessment in this
course, learners must have completed WorkCover approved WHS General Induction
Training.

The course structure below shows what you must do to complete this course.
units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.
 
You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course reflects the packaging requirements for RII50509 Diploma of
Civil Construction Design (Release 3) within the RII09 Resources and
Infrastructure Training Package (Release 3.2).
 
The qualification packaging rules state:
 
Successful completion of twenty (20) units made up of:
 
- a minimum of four (4) units from the Group A units listed in RII50509
- a minimum of two (2) units from the Group B Drafting units listed in
RII50509 - a minimum of four (4) units of competency from the Group C
Design units listed in RII50509
- a minimum of four (4) units of competency from the Group D Technical
units listed in RII50509
- a maximum of two (2) units at Certificate IV, Diploma, or Advanced
Diploma level, may come from this, or any other Training Package or
accredited course.  

Units of competency chosen must
- be relevant to the competency requirements for the job function
- reflect the competency profile for the occupation at the enterprise level
- in the case of accredited course units of competency, not duplicate in
part or in whole any unit from a Training Package.
 
Care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisites specified within
imported units, or units chosen as electives, are complied with.
 
Note: The units chosen to satisfy the Diploma of Civil Construction Design
be additional to the units achieved to satisfy the Certificate IV in Civil
Construction Design.
 
 
To satisfy the Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
A total of 20 units must be completed.

NOTES FOR STUDENTS

1. LEARNER SUPPORT

the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
 
2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
 
4. PREREQUISITE UNITS
Some units in this course have prerequisites that must be completed in a
lower level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Package or consult your teacher for information about prerequisites to
elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve RII50509 Diploma of Civil Construction Design (TAFE NSW course
19880), learners are required to complete 20 units of competency, as follows:
 
-  at least 4 elective units from Group 1
-  at least 2 elective units from Group 2
-  at least 4 elective units from Group 3
-  at least 4 elective units from Group 4
-  a maximum of 2 elective units from Group 5.
