Course overview

Course Description

This course is for people who want to work as a production operator in an
open cut mine or quarry. It provides comprehensive and integrated training
and skills, knowledge and/or recognition required by skilled operators
working under minimal supervision.
 
You will learn to perform a range of functions involving a broad range of
skilled applications applied in a wide variety of contexts. You will
acquire the skills needed to apply some discretion and judgement in
deciding upon equipment, services or contingency measures.
 
By completing this course you will be able to observe statutory and legal
compliance requirements and work with environment, communication and risk
management systems.
 
You must be currently employed in, or have authorised access to, an
operational open cut mine or quarry while undertaking this course.

You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course reflects the packaging requirements for RII30111 Certificate
III in Surface Extraction Operations within the Resources and
Infrastructure Industry Training Package (RII09, v2). The rules from RII09
follows:
 
Successful completion of thirteen (13) units of competency made up of:
 
- five (5) mandatory units, and
- eight (8) elective units of which:
 
- at least three (3) must come from the specified electives listed below
- up to three (3) from the general electives listed below
- up to two (2) from Certificate II, Certificate III or Certificate IV
level from this, or any other Training Package
 
Units chosen must be relevant to the job function.
 
Care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisites specified within
imported units, or units chosen as electives, are complied with.
 
 
To satisfy the Training Package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
13 units must be completed - 5 compulsory (core) plus 8 electives
 
Group 1 - Core Units
--------------------
All 5 core units must be completed. This group contains three subgroups.
 
Subgroup 1 - Core General Units.
All 3 units must be completed from this subgroup.
NB. These three units are compulsory for all sectors.
 
Subgroup 2 - Core Communication Units.
One unit only must be completed from this subgroup.
 
NB. Either unit RIICOM301B OR RIICOM302A is compulsory for the
Metalliferous and Extractive sectors.
The unit RIICOM301B is mandatory in the Coal Sector in NSW.
 
Subgroup 3 - Core Work Standards/Processes Units.
One unit only must be completed from this subgroup.
 
NB. Either unit RIIGOV201A OR RIIQUA201A is compulsory for the
Metalliferous and Extractive sectors.
The unit RIIGOV201A MUST be completed by the Coal Sector.
 
 
Group 2 - Specified Elective Units listed in RII3011

NOTES FOR STUDENTS

1. LEARNER SUPPORT

2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.
 
4. PREREQUISITE UNITS
Some units in this course may have prerequisites that must be completed in
lower level qualification or selected as part of this course. Refer to the
Training Package or consult your teacher for information about
prerequisites to elective units.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve RII30111, Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations
(TAFE NSW course 20081), learners are required to complete 13 units of
competency, comprising:
 
-   All 5 compulsory (core) units from Group 1
-   At least 3 and no more than 8 elective units from Group 2
-   Up to 3 elective units from Group 3
-   Up to 2 units from Group 4
