Course overview

Course Description

This course is for people who want to develop the practical skills and
knowledge required to work as a coxswain. You will learn to take charge of
vessels less than 12 metres in length and with engines up to 250kW,
operating within inshore limits (up to 15 nautical miles from the coast).
 
Evidence of sea time/service on board a vessel will be required to obtain a
Certificate of Competency from the state regulatory authority.

Career Opportunities

The next career step for a person with this qualification is to become a Master
Class 5. An alternative pathway would be to undertake marine engine driver
qualifications commencing at Marine Engine Driver Grade 3. These career options
are available upon gaining further sea experience and undertaking additional
courses:

You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
The packaging rules for TDM20307 Certificate II in Transport and
Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain) from the TDM07
Maritime Training Package version 1.0 require successful completion of
sixteen mandatory units of competency relating to equipment checking and
maintenance, vessel manoeuvring, communication, operational quality and
safety, carrying out operations on equipment and systems, navigation and
environment. Additional units may be included in the qualification if
required to meet any specific needs beyond the minimum mandatory
requirements.  

The TAFE NSW course 17447 Certificate II in Transport and Distribution
(Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain) contains the following course
structure:  

Group 1 - Mandatory Units
-------------------------
Group 1 is core and contains sixteen mandatory units of competency. All
units in this group must be successfully completed.
 
Note 1:
Unit TDMMF1007B - Provide elementary first aid included in the core group,
consistent with competency requirements set for the St John Ambulance
National Senior Level First Aid Certificate or Level 2 First Aid
Certificate. However, this unit does not meet WorkCover NSW requirements
for a Senior First Aid Certificate. Learners will also need to enrol in,
and successfully complete, the module 3223A Senior first aid in Group 2
(Enrichment group) to be eligible to receive the WorkCover approved Senior
 
Note 2:
According to the TDM07 Maritime training package, where individuals are
likely to only operate VHF equipment and are specifically preparing for
their AMSA VHF radio operator's certificate, unit TDMME1007A (Transmit and
by marine VHF radio or telephone) may be selected in place of unit
TDMME507B (Transmit and receive information by marine radio or telephone).
South Wales, the NSW Maritime Authority requires the completion of unit
TDMME507B (Transmit and receive information by marine radio or telephone),
has been included in the core group as per the training packaging rules
for the qualification.
 
Group 2 - Optional additional units
-----------------------------------
Group 2 is enrichment and contains relevant units from this or other
Training Packages which may be included in the qualification to satisfy
specific additional needs beyond the minimum mandatory requirements. This
group is not required for course completion. This group also contains Unit
HLTFA311A.  To receive the WorkCover approved Senior First Aid Certificate
learners will need to enrol in, and successfully complete, the Unit of
Competency HLTFA311A in this group and receive the unit TDMMF1007B by
advanced standing.
 
Inclusion of Additional Units of Competency
-------------------------------------------
The teaching section should contact the program manager if a request is
received from an industry group to include a specific unit of competency
that is not already in the course or if a learner is seeking recognition
of a unit of competency achieved at an RTO other than TAFE that is not in
the course structure. If the requested unit of competency meets the
Training Package qualification rules it will be included in the course
structure in an appropriate group for delivery or recognition.
 
Note: None of the units of competency in the Maritime Training Package have
either pre-requisite or co-requisite requirements. Where units of
competency are included from another Training Package, Registered Training
check the National Training Information System (NTIS) or contact the
Industry Skills Council responsible for the Training Package to check if
the unit has any pre requisite or co requisite requirements.
 
Learner Support

TAFE NSW learners who require additional support to meet their learning
goals can co-enrol in the TAFE NSW Statement of Attainment in Learner
Support (9999). This course replaces the module Tutorial Support 8999A.
