Course overview

Course Description

This qualification is for people who want to enter the music industry in a
range of business roles as band or artist managers, booking agents, music
marketing and promotions officers or as self employed, independent
musicians.  

You will develop knowledge and skills to monitor and manage small business
operations. You will plan a music industry career, develop micro business
proposals and implement copyright arrangements. You will also learn to
follow health and safety procedures relevant to music business.
 
From the specialist and elective units you can develop skills related to
music business, such as band, artist, event or venue booking and
management, financial administration or marketing and promotions. You can
also employ critical thinking and writing skills, use ICT and digital
media tools.  

Pathways into the qualification
 
- Certificate III qualification in marketing or business management
  (e.g. CUS30309 Certificate III in Music Business or BSB30107
  Certificate III in Business)
- vocational experience in marketing or business management, but without
  formal marketing or business management qualifications
- with limited or no vocational experience and without a relevant lower
  level qualification.

Career Opportunities

Relevant job roles may include working as an artist manager, booking agent,
music marketing and promotions officer or as self employed, independent
musician.

Articulation

When you finish this course you can continue on to further specialised studies
at Diploma level, e.g. the Diploma of Music Business (19372); and relevant
Diploma qualifications from the BSB07 Business Services training package.

Entry Requirements

 There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Pathways into this qualification
--------------------------------
Entry to the qualification may follow successful completion of a Certificate III
qualification in marketing or business management (e.g. CUS30309 Certificate III
in Music Business or BSB30107 Certificate III in Business); or vocational
experience in marketing or business management, but without formal marketing or
business management qualifications. Candidates may also enter the qualification
with limited or no vocational experience and without a relevant lower level
qualification.

You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions.   If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.  At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
 
 
This course reflects the packaging requirements for CUS40309 Certificate
IV in Music Business within the Music Training Package (CUS09 - V1.2). The
CUS09 Training Package are as follows:
 
Packaging Rules
 
Total number of units = 14
4 core units
6 Group A units
4 elective units
 
2 elective units must be selected from the Group A and/or Group B units
listed below.
 
The remaining 2 elective units may be selected from the Group A and/or
Group B units listed below or any unit of competency from any endorsed
Training Package or accredited course.
 
No more than 3 Group A or Group B units previously achieved as part of
another qualification may be counted towards the qualification. Electives
must be relevant to the work outcome, local industry requirements and be
at appropriate qualification level.
 
To satisfy the training package requirements, this TAFE NSW course has been
structured as follows:
 
Group 1 - Core Units

ALL 4 core units must be completed
 
Group 2 - Group A Specialist Units listed in CUS40309

6 specialist units must be completed from subgroups 1 to 10. The
subgroups represent each of the specialist areas outlined in the training
package.
 
Group 3 - Group B Elective Units listed CUS40309
------------------------------------------------
4 elective units must be completed. At least 2 elective units must be
completed from the subgroups within this group 3 and/or from the subgroups
above. The remaining 2 elective units may be completed from the subgroups
within this group 3 and/or from the subgroups within group 2 above and/or
from group 4 below which contains units of competency at from any endorsed
package or accredited course.
 
Group 4 - Elective Units from any endorsed training package or accredited
course

The context for this qualification varies, and this must guide the
selection of elective units. The training package provides examples
designed to assist in the selection of appropriate electives for
particular outcomes at this level, but they are in no way prescriptive.
 
 
NOTES FOR STUDENTS

1. LEARNER SUPPORT
Students who require support to meet their learning goals may co-enrol in
the Learner Support course (TAFE Course Number 9999). Talk to your teacher
think you may require learner support.
 
2. SELECTION OF ELECTIVES
Talk to your teacher and/or workplace trainer to ensure that your
combination of electives provides you with a suitable vocational outcome.
 
3. RECOGNITION
If you have completed other relevant training you may be eligible to have
units of competency from previous training counted towards completion for
this course. Talk to your teacher or workplace trainer if you think you
may be eligible for recognition for units previously completed.

Requirements to receive the qualification

To achieve the qualification CUS40309 Certificate IV in Music Business (TAFE NSW
course 19369) learners are required to complete 14 units of competency,
