This course teaches you the skills and knowledge required to serve alcohol
in a responsible manner. It is endorsed by the Office of Liquor, Gaming
and Racing and the NSW Liquor Administration Board.
You will learn about responsible service strategies; the legal obligations
of bar staff; and, the strengths and effects of alcoholic beverages and
standard drinks. You will also learn about smoking regulations and the
benefits of responsible service strategies.
This is an essential requirement for any job involving the service of alcohol
to the public.
The unit of competence in this course (SITHFAB009A Provide responsible service
of alcohol) is a requirement in all Hospitality courses involving the service of
alcohol and as such allows for credit transfer into those courses.
There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Whilst NSW laws regulate the sale, consumption and provision of alcohol to
people under the age of 18 years (minors) there is no specific advice given by
the NSW Office Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR) , The Liquor Act (2007), The
Liquor Regulation (2008) and Service Skills Australia about the age of
participants undertaking units of competency related to the sale, consumption
and provision of alcohol.
TAFE NSW Tourism Hospitality and Events Project Advisory Group, made up of
representatives from all TAFE NSW Institutes, however have therefore agreed that
there be a minimum age restriction of 17 years as an entry requirement into the
following unit in this course:
SITHFAB009A Provide responsible service of alcohol.

You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course
completion instructions. If a course contains optional groups there will
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do. At the
top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.
