When you have completed this unit of competency you will understand basic methods of vessel design, the stresses which act on the structure of a small vessel and the principles and procedures to ensure the watertight integrity of the hull and how these influence vessel construction. You will be able to identify and explain construction materials, structural features, fittings and equipment of a small vessel and the causes and control of corrosion. You will be able to interpret ships drawings and plans and small vessel stability data. You will be able to monitor the condition and seaworthiness of a small vessel, take action to maintain its watertight integrity and rectify problems with its condition.
